Welcome to my random thoughts diary. Here I dish about philosophy, life, people, and myself. I'll talk about pretty much anything BUT politics here, so have a look and hopefully you'll leave here with something to think about.

Virtue

Location: Class

Would you consider virtue to be a good thing?

Of course, most of us would. Virtue is almost always portrayed as a positve personality trait. Now, here comes the hard part.

Define Virtue.

It's hard isn't it? I never really thought about it. Virtue is an abstract that realy has no definite meaning, yet it is an admirable trait that everyone agrees is typical of a person with good character.

How is this possible?

For me, virtue is not needing a reason to help others. The virtuous path is merely giving of oneself without expectation; fighting for the rights of others even if you are not one of those affected; helping someone merely because you have the capacity to do so.

In other words, your angry protester, your straight supporter of gay rights, your university professor, your volunteers at a homeless shelter, etc., these are among the most virtuous people on the planet.

Ironic, eh?
